Senate education panel erupts over proposed mandatory school uniforms

Lawmakers gathered in the Senate’s Education Committee to discuss a draft legislation that would make school uniforms compulsory across Romania. Senator Daniel Zamfir presented the bill’s objectives and urged the Education Ministry’s delegate to articulate the ministry’s concerns without relying on prepared notes. USR senator Ştefan Pălărie interrupted, calling Zamfir uncivil and accusing him of reading from a paper, while also disputing the ministry’s argument that the measure infringes on individual rights.

The Ministry of Education and Research reiterated its opposition, citing the protection of personal freedoms as a key reason. In contrast, the Ministry of Internal Affairs signaled approval, suggesting that mandatory uniforms could lessen socioeconomic gaps among students. The debate grew heated as Pălărie cited non-existent penalty clauses and legal articles, which Zamfir contested.
