Senate panel says DOJ gathered extensive data on Republican voters and donors

Senate Judiciary Chairman Chuck Grassley reported that the Justice Department obtained spreadsheets containing personal information on hundreds of thousands of Republican voters and donors.

A memorandum from Senate Judiciary Chairman Chuck Grassley revealed that the Justice Department, under former special counsel Jack Smith, obtained spreadsheets covering at least 639,000 Republican voters and donors, with over 148,000 entries marked as donors. The compiled data includes personal identifiers such as names, dates of birth, physical addresses, email addresses, party affiliation, occupations, workplaces, and credit-card details, as well as donation amounts.

Grassley argued that the breadth of the collection appears excessive for the Arctic Frost investigation into attempts to overturn the 2020 election results. He urged Democratic senators to join oversight efforts rather than defend the DOJ's actions. Smith, when questioned, acknowledged that his team gathered financial information as part of a criminal investigation into what he described as one of the most serious crimes in U.S. history.

Why it matters

The disclosure raises concerns about government overreach and privacy for political supporters.
