Senate President Larcher condemns recent urban unrest and calls for justice ministry data

Gérard Larcher said France is facing a crisis of weakness after the recent riots and demanded the justice minister disclose conviction and detention figures.

Gérard Larcher told the Figaro that the riots have left the country feeling shocked, angry and ashamed, highlighting damage to municipalities, prefectures, businesses and emergency services. He emphasized that the security policy has been undermined and that law-enforcement officers need backing, not calls for “empathy”. The Senate’s law commission has approved the creation of a dedicated information mission to examine the disturbances, which may be granted investigative authority.

Larcher also demanded that the minister of justice reveal the precise statistics on convictions and detentions related to the unrest. He expressed deep consternation over the overall situation and called for a thorough assessment.

Why it matters

The Senate leader’s call for transparency and a formal inquiry signals heightened political pressure over France’s handling of recent riots.
