Senator Jim Justice Secures Unanimous Vote for WWII Medal of Honor Monument on the Mall

Sen. Jim Justice, R-W.Va., achieved unanimous Senate approval for his inaugural legislation, the Williams National Medal of Honor Monument Location Act, which directs a new monument to be installed on the National Mall’s Reserve. The bill honors Hershel "Woody" Williams, the last surviving World War II Medal of Honor recipient, who died in 2022 at age 98. After the House passed the measure on Aug. 31, Justice credited a direct conversation with Sen. Martin Heinrich, D-N.M., for breaking the partisan deadlock.

He described the process as a rare moment of cooperation amid ongoing Senate polarization. The monument will commemorate Williams by name and all Medal of Honor recipients, and the legislation now awaits President Trump’s signature.
