Senator Jinggoy Estrada receives a second 90-day preventive suspension
The Sandiganbayan Fifth Division ordered a fresh 90-day preventive suspension for Senator Jinggoy Estrada over pending plunder and graft charges linked to flood-control projects.
The Sandiganbayan Fifth Division has placed Senator Jinggoy Estrada under a new 90-day preventive suspension related to plunder and graft accusations involving flood-control projects. This marks the second such suspension after the court’s Second Division issued a comparable order in June. The Fifth Division ordered that its resolution be sent to Senate President Sherwin Gatchalian through the Senate Secretary, and the Senate President’s office must inform the tribunal of any action within five days.
In September, the court upheld its earlier denial of Estrada’s motion to fix bail in the P573-million plunder case, stating his appeal showed no substantial error of fact or law. The judges noted Estrada’s arguments about his incumbency and travel-condition compliance did not address the core issue. The suspension remains in effect while the graft case proceeds.
Why it matters
The suspension highlights ongoing legal challenges faced by a senior lawmaker over a major public-works scandal.
