Senator Petrișor Peiu marks PNȚ centenary, hails its democratic legacy

Senator Petrișor Peiu used his Facebook post to celebrate 100 years of the Partidul Național Țărănesc, recalling its battles against authoritarian regimes and outlining six democratic principles he associates with its history.

Petrișor Peiu, a Romanian senator, posted a tribute on Facebook to mark the 100th anniversary of the Partidul Național Țărănesc (PNȚ). He highlighted the party’s historic confrontations with authoritarian leaders, from the liberal Ionel Brătianu to King Carol II’s personal dictatorship, and later its resistance to the communist “monster” that followed. The senator noted the party’s ban under communism and its diminished influence after the 1989 Revolution, while still recognizing PNȚ-CD and other offshoots as symbolic carriers of Christian-democratic ideals.

Peiu described the PNȚ as an “exceptional political school” that instilled moral standards, verticality and balance in post-revolutionary Romania. He concluded by enumerating six principles—respect for the popular vote, rejection of personal regimes, national unity, social justice, press liberty, and dialogic civility—as the foundation of the party’s democratic heritage.

Why it matters

The tribute underscores how historic parties shape contemporary political values and identity in Romania.
