Senator Slotkin Calls for Prosecutions to Deter Young Conservatives from Trump Administration Jobs
Sen. Elissa Slotkin said she wants high-profile prosecutions of Trump-era officials to discourage recent graduates from seeking jobs in that administration.
During a live recording of Vox’s America, Actually! podcast at the University of Chicago’s Institute of Politics, Senator Elissa Slotkin urged that “signature cases” be pursued against Trump administration figures to send a warning to recent graduates. She said the prosecutions should focus on the president’s enablers, hoping to make a career in that government appear risky. Slotkin referenced a September 30 address to the Carnegie Endowment for International Peace, likening the effort to Europe’s post-authoritarian clean-ups such as Poland’s “Iron Broom.”
In that speech she singled out former Homeland Security Secretary Kristi Noem, former Interior Secretary Doug Burgum and former U.S. Attorney Jeanine Pirro as potential targets, noting misuse of taxpayer funds can carry up to 20 years in prison. The comments arrive months after a Justice Department investigation examined whether to indict Slotkin and other Democrats over a video urging military members to refuse illegal orders, a probe that ultimately did not result in charges.
Why it matters
The proposal signals a push to use legal action as a political deterrent, affecting future recruitment for government roles.
