Senator Victoria Stoiciu to discuss decriminalising personal drug possession with parents
Senator Victoria Stoiciu will answer parents' questions about a bill that would replace prison sentences for personal drug possession with fines.
A live online session titled “Trends” will feature independent senator Victoria Stoiciu fielding questions from the National Parents Federation Edupart about a legislative initiative to de-criminalise possession of drugs for personal consumption. Criminologist Vlad Zaha, who helped draft the bill, and social worker Alina Dumitriu, experienced in addiction care, will also take part. The proposal, introduced by Stoiciu, Daniel Fenechiu and Cristian Ghinea, calls for replacing imprisonment with a financial sanction for individuals caught with drugs intended for personal use.
Its proponents note that two-thirds of DIICOT’s workload concerns such cases, with convictions for personal possession rising steadily over the past decade. They claim the reform would ease pressure on courts and prisons, redirect resources toward trafficking offenses, and improve public-health outcomes. The bill maintains that drug trafficking remains a criminal offence and would allow supervised consumption spaces for diagnosed addicts.
