Senegalese unions launch three-day general strike ahead of first African Youth Olympics

A coalition of 13 union federations began a three-day general strike in Dakar, timed just days before the Youth Olympic Games open in the city.

On the eve of the Youth Olympic Games, a coalition of 13 Senegalese union federations initiated a three-day general strike in Dakar, disrupting traffic during the evening rush hour. Demonstrators, many wearing red hats and waving flags, called for higher wages, stronger job security, increased pensions and a modest housing subsidy. The government, represented by Minister Mamadou Lamine Dianté, appealed to workers' sense of responsibility, arguing that the Games are vital for the country's reputation abroad.

Unions rejected the appeal, citing months of unfulfilled promises, soaring food prices and a deteriorating purchasing power. The dispute unfolds against a backdrop of political tension between President Diomaye Faye and former prime minister Ousmane Sonko, who recently threatened to block a budget vote in parliament. Authorities have warned that participants in the strike could face wage deductions and disciplinary measures.
