Senior Citizens League trims 2027 Social Security COLA forecast to 3.6%
The Senior Citizens League lowered its estimate for next year’s Social Security cost-of-living adjustment to 3.6%, down from 3.8%.
Following a modest decline in the U.S. inflation rate for July, the Senior Citizens League reduced its outlook for the 2027 Social Security cost-of-living adjustment to 3.6%, from an earlier 3.8% estimate. The July inflation figure, released by the Bureau of Labor Statistics, slipped to 3.4% from 3.5% in June. Even with the cut, the projected COLA would be the highest increase in four years.
The organization noted that seniors experience inflation directly at stores, pharmacies, and in housing costs, underscoring the importance of the adjustment reflecting real-world expenses. The league’s statement highlighted the practical impact of the COLA on retirees’ daily budgets.
Why it matters
The adjustment determines how much Social Security benefits will rise, affecting millions of retirees’ purchasing power.
