Senior Kinahan cartel founder faces no charges as Dubai visa expires
Christy Kinahan senior, the Kinahan cartel founder, has no criminal charges pending and must depart Dubai by September 29 after his residency visa was revoked.
The Director of Public Prosecutions concluded that no criminal charges can be brought against Christy Kinahan senior, the 69-year-old founder of the Kinahan cartel, unless new evidence emerges. Although he is still listed on the United States sanctions list and a $5 million bounty remains for information leading to his arrest, his United Arab Emirates residency visa was revoked, requiring him to exit Dubai by September 29.
His two sons, Daniel and Christopher jnr, continue to face legal actions: Daniel was arrested in Dubai, extradited to Ireland and will stand trial in the Special Criminal Court, while Christopher jnr remains under investigation. A separate associate, Seán McGovern, was also extradited and sentenced to 24 years for directing criminal activity. Ongoing investigations by An Garda Síochána and the UK National Crime Agency have largely dismantled the cartel’s presence in Ireland and Britain over the past decade.
