Senior Software Engineer Openings Surge While Junior Roles Lag Behind

Hiring for software engineers is picking up again, but the recovery is uneven, favoring senior positions. Recent data show that close to 70% of U.S. software development job ads are for senior roles, up from about 55% a few years earlier, making the sector the top employer of senior talent across more than 40 industries. While overall postings have risen, they still sit below pre-pandemic levels, and junior and mid-level openings have not kept pace.

Economists suggest the trend reflects a demand for experienced engineers who can direct AI outputs, catch errors, and make complex judgments. Workers with a decade or more of experience report that much of their coding time now involves prompting and reviewing AI tools. The limited entry-level pipeline could eventually constrain the supply of future senior engineers.
