Seoul Police Name 26-Year-Old Suspect in Mother-in-Law Murder and Wife Kidnapping
Police have publicly identified 26-year-old Kim Sung-woo as the suspect in the murder of his mother-in-law and the kidnapping of his wife in Songpa-gu, Seoul.
On Monday, the Seoul Metropolitan Police Agency announced that 26-year-old Kim Sung-woo is the suspect in the Oct. 11 murder of his mother-in-law and the kidnapping of his wife in Munjeong-dong, Songpa-gu. After a review committee concluded the case satisfied legal standards for public disclosure, the agency posted his identity and photographs online until Nov. 17. Kim allegedly killed his mother-in-law, who was found in cardiac arrest and later died, and abducted his wife before escaping to a forested hillside in Gangwon Province, where police arrested him later that afternoon.
A court issued an arrest warrant on Oct. 13, allowing continued detention, and authorities will forward the case to the Seoul Eastern District Prosecutors’ Office on charges of murder and aggravated confinement. The tragedy has renewed scrutiny of domestic-violence safeguards, noting that the wife’s temporary restraining order had lapsed while a renewal request was being processed.
Why it matters
The case underscores shortcomings in South Korea’s protection system for domestic-violence victims.
