September Russian Casualties Hit 46,230, Mark 2026 Peak, Ukraine Reports
Ukraine's General Staff says Russian forces lost an estimated 46,230 personnel in September, the highest monthly toll recorded this year.
Ukraine's General Staff reported that Russian troops suffered about 46,230 personnel losses in September, the largest monthly count for 2026. This exceeds the summer peaks of 42,860 in July and 42,020 in August, and reflects a rise from 31,710 in January - an increase of roughly 46%. Kyiv officials claim the trend shows Russian military leadership's inability to meet objectives and the growing effectiveness of Ukrainian strikes.
Since January, Ukraine has pursued a strategy of causing heavy casualties, aiming for 50,000 losses per month. The growing loss rate adds pressure on Moscow to find replacements while continuing its offensive, as recruitment slows and the manpower balance becomes critical.
Why it matters
Rising Russian casualties could weaken Moscow's capacity to sustain its invasion of Ukraine.
