September’s Global Photo Highlights: From Moon Crater to Energy Crises and Protests

A monthly roundup of striking images and events, including NASA’s new lunar crater, ongoing wars, energy shortages and worldwide protests.

Each September, one outlet’s photo editors choose pictures that best reflect the month’s most impactful stories. This edition features NASA’s identification of the largest fresh crater on the Moon, formed by a three-storey-sized asteroid between early April and late May 2025. It also documents the continued devastation in Kyiv and Gaza, where civilian casualties remain high.

Energy shortages are shown in Cuba and the Gambia, while fuel-price protests erupted in France, Bolivia and Syria. New photographer Alexandre Moreels covered Prins Dag in The Hague, and veteran photojournalist Bart Maat captured behind-the-scenes moments in the Dutch parliament. Additional images depict protests by far-right groups in the Netherlands and environmental damage in Indonesia’s Kalimantan.
