Sequoia veteran Doug Leone recounts pain-filled dental stunt before a meeting
Doug Leone, a longtime Sequoia Capital partner, said he asked a dentist to drill a tooth without anesthesia to avoid sounding odd in an upcoming meeting.
During a conversation on the "David Senra" podcast, Sequoia Capital partner Doug Leone recounted asking a dentist to extract a tooth without any Novocaine so he would not sound or look funny in a subsequent meeting. He framed the decision as a personal challenge to prove his own resilience, noting that many of his pivotal career choices stem from a fear of becoming irrelevant rather than pure ambition. Leone also recalled that when he became a partner in 1993, a divorce left him financially strained, forcing him to sleep in his car and shower at Sequoia’s headquarters on Sand Hill Road.
After stepping down in 2022, he rejoined the firm in March to pursue AI opportunities, describing himself as a "low-level analyst" who must constantly prove his worth. He warned that if he feels irrelevant a year after his return, he may consider leaving again, underscoring the ongoing pressure he places on himself.
