Belgrade held a quasi-state funeral for Radko Mladić, the former Bosnian Serb commander convicted for the 1995 Srebrenica genocide, drawing massive public mourning that revealed persistent nationalist currents in Serbian society. While the European Union has provided roughly €1.5 billion each year since Serbia became a candidate in 2012, opened most accession chapters, and granted visa-free travel, the spectacle raised questions about the country’s alignment with EU democratic standards.
President Aleksandar Vučić, who has received extensive EU diplomatic attention, continues to maintain close links with Russia and Israel, further complicating his EU prospects. Snap parliamentary elections scheduled for October will determine if voters choose to retain Vučić, echoing Hungary’s recent ouster of Viktor Orbán, or demand a new direction.
