Serbian voters face first serious challenge to Vučić from student-backed opposition

Serbia will hold a Sunday election that could serve as a de-facto referendum on Aleksandar Vučić, whose long-standing rule may be contested by a student-driven challenger.

On Sunday, Serbians will vote in an election that many view as a direct test of Aleksandar Vučić's dominance. Vučić, leader of the national-conservative Serbian Progressive Party, has held power for over a decade. For the first time in years, a challenger emerging from the student movement appears to have a realistic chance of defeating him. The contest is being framed as a choice between the incumbent and a new, leaderless student coalition.

Why it matters

The vote could reshape Serbia's political landscape by ending a decade of Vučić's dominance.
