Serbian voters head to polls as 18 party lists compete for parliament
Polling stations opened Sunday at 7 a.m. across Serbia, where voters can choose from 18 competing party lists for the 250-seat parliament.
Serbian polling stations opened at 7 a.m. on Sunday for a parliamentary election that includes 18 party lists competing for 250 seats. The United Serbia list, headed by former president Aleksandar Vucic, faces the University List, a new formation born from protests following a fatal train accident that claimed 16 lives. The Vojvodina Hungarian Alliance (VMSZ) runs as the sole Hungarian party, aiming to secure the five seats needed for an independent parliamentary faction.
Nine of the lists represent national minorities, which are exempt from the three-percent threshold applied to other parties. Voters may cast their ballots until 8 p.m., with unofficial results expected shortly after polls close and official tallies to be released by the Republic Election Commission within 96 hours.
Why it matters
The election will determine Serbia's next parliament and government composition.
