Serbian wages outpaced by soaring prices, prompting new inflation surge
Economist Radojka Nikolić warned that Serbia faces another wave of inflation that will erode purchasing power despite rising wages.
Radojka Nikolić, a respected Serbian economist and journalist, warned that a new inflationary wave is expected to hit Serbia and other European nations before the year ends. She explained that price increases in Serbia have outpaced those in the EU, severely weakening the buying power of wages. While average salaries have roughly doubled over the past few years, price hikes have been even more pronounced, leaving households able to afford far fewer goods and services than six years ago. Data from the Republic Statistical Office indicate that annual inflation rose to 4.1 percent in September, up from 2.2 percent in August and 1.9 percent in July, signalling a renewed acceleration in price growth.
Why it matters
