Sergey Brin steers Google Gemini from a makeshift microkitchen amid AI leadership shake-up

After Alphabet’s 2023 AI reorganization—Demis Hassabis relinquishing the DeepMind CEO title, Jeff Dean leaving, and Koray Kavukcuoglu becoming SVP of DeepMind—Sergey Brin has emerged as an informal leader of the Gemini project. He and Kavukcuoglu operate out of a "microkitchen" on the second floor of the Gradient Canopy building near Mountain View, a spot that Sundar Pichai visits regularly. This informal hub enables Brin to cut through internal politics, allocate computing resources, and shape decisions on model size, release timing, and recursive self-improvement.
Staff say his push for a startup-like pace aims to close the gap with rivals such as OpenAI, while some of his moves, like halting a chip-integration effort, have caused friction. Recent hires and reported gains in Gemini’s coding abilities offer optimism ahead of the planned Gemini 4 launch.
