Serian haze emergency prompts school closures and work shutdowns as air quality deteriorates
A haze emergency has been declared in Serian, Sarawak, after air quality reached hazardous levels. Schools in the district have been closed and non‑essential workplaces within a 20 km radius are ordered to suspend operations, while essential services remain open. Monitoring stations in Kuching, Samarahan and Sri Aman report very unhealthy readings, and several other towns across Malaysia are experiencing unhealthy air quality.
The haze is attributed to forest and peat fires in Indonesia’s Kalimantan and Sumatra regions, where authorities have arrested suspected arsonists. Federal and state leaders are meeting to consider further response actions.
