Series of moderate quakes rattles Turkey's Adana and Osmaniye provinces

On Oct. 4, two moderate earthquakes struck Adana’s Saimbeyli district and Osmaniye’s Sumbas district, with officials reporting no immediate damage.

Turkey’s southern provinces experienced a cluster of moderate earthquakes on Oct. 4. The first tremor, magnitude 4.8, occurred at 2:19 p.m. in Adana’s Saimbeyli district at a depth of 7.9 km, and was quickly followed by a 4.9-magnitude shock. At 2:43 p.m., a magnitude 5.2 quake struck Osmaniye’s Sumbas district, also shallow at about 7 km.

Local governors reported no injuries, fatalities, or infrastructure damage, and interior minister Mustafa Çiftçi confirmed that emergency teams were conducting on-site inspections. Geologist Professor Dr. Okan Tüysüz explained that the region’s crust is still under stress from the deadly Feb. 6, 2023 earthquakes, which killed over 53,000 people, and that the recent quakes are likely aftershocks linked to that event. He added that the area is characterized by many small faults rather than a single major fault, reducing the likelihood of a magnitude-7 earthquake.

Why it matters

The quakes highlight ongoing seismic risk in a region still recovering from the 2023 disaster.
