Serious crash shuts down part of Tauranga's State Highway 2, causing delays
A single-vehicle collision on State Highway 2/Takitimu Drive in Tauranga has led to the road’s closure and heavy traffic in both directions.
Around 11:15 am, police were called to a serious single-vehicle accident on State Highway 2/Takitimu Drive near the Waihī Road on-ramp in Tauranga. Initial reports indicate several occupants suffered serious injuries, prompting the Serious Crash Unit’s involvement. Hato Hone St John and Fire and Emergency New Zealand dispatched crews to assist police and ambulance staff.
The NZ Transport Agency confirmed that traffic is heavy in both directions and that the road will remain closed for an undetermined time. Drivers are advised to avoid the area, allowing extra time for detours; light-vehicle traffic can exit onto 15th Avenue, while heavy-vehicle traffic should use SH 29A via Moffat and Cambridge. Authorities continue to manage the scene while emergency services attend to the injured.
