Settler group files plan for new Jewish quarter in Sheikh Jarrah amid Hebron crackdown
The Amara movement has applied to build a 122-unit Jewish neighbourhood on the former Shepherd Hotel site in Sheikh Jarrah, with a hearing set for 11 November. At the same time, Israeli forces have intensified operations in Hebron, detaining dozens of Palestinians.
The Amara movement, a veteran settler group, lodged an application with the planning association to develop a new Jewish neighbourhood comprising 122 apartments on the site of the demolished Shepherd Hotel in Sheikh Jarrah, East Jerusalem. The proposal, the first of its kind for Amara in that district, will face an initial hearing before Jerusalem’s Local Planning and Building Committee on 11 November. Meanwhile, Israeli forces have escalated a large-scale operation in the West Bank city of Hebron, detaining at least 20 Palestinians and displacing more than 2,200 residents.
According to the Palestinian news agency Wafa, troops stormed most Hebron neighbourhoods, raided homes in Dura, Yatta, as-Samu and other nearby towns, and turned several Palestinian houses in southern Hebron into barracks and observation posts. Additional arrests occurred in Tarqumiya and Halhul. The dual developments highlight ongoing tensions over settlement expansion and security measures in the occupied territories.
Why it matters
The plan could alter Jerusalem's demographics while the Hebron raids intensify Israeli-Palestinian tensions.
