Seven detained in connection with Manisa school shooting that wounded 11 students

Around 8 a.m. on Sept. 22, a 15-year-old student opened fire near İnci Üzmez Vocational and Technical Anatolian High School in Turgutlu, Manisa province, wounding 11 pupils. He later surrendered to police and was detained. Authorities have placed seven people in custody: the teenager, his mother, father, grandfather, cousin, a friend, and the owner of a hunting-equipment shop alleged to have sold the ammunition used.

Three additional suspects were released under judicial supervision. The wounded include eight students from the school itself and three from another local vocational school; three remain in intensive care but are conscious. Searches of the teen’s home uncovered ideological notes and a manifesto-like document, though a motive has not been publicly identified. The Education Ministry has assigned three inspectors to examine the incident, which follows recent legislative changes tightening penalties for adult negligence in children’s firearm access.
