Seven & i shuts down all 7-Eleven stores in India after five years

Seven & i Holdings has closed the remaining 31 7-Eleven outlets in India, ending the brand’s presence in the market.

Seven & i Holdings confirmed that all 31 remaining 7-Eleven stores in India have been closed, effectively ending the chain’s five-year experiment in the country. The stores were run under a five-year licence agreement with Reliance Retail, which opened the first outlet in Mumbai in October 2021. After peaking at roughly 60 shops at the end of last year, the network shrank sharply amid strong domestic rivals and sluggish profit growth.

The closures were completed at the end of September, as disclosed by the company on October 5. In a statement, Seven & i said it will consider a range of strategies for its Indian operations but did not indicate whether it will reopen stores or seek a new partner.

Why it matters

The shutdown removes a major international convenience-store brand from one of the world's largest consumer markets.
