The Planetary Health Check 2026, authored by more than 60 scientists, reveals that seven of nine planetary boundaries have crossed into dangerous territory, indicating severe, potentially irreversible damage. Climate change, the release of synthetic substances, disrupted nutrient cycles and biosphere degradation are now classified as high-risk, demanding urgent action. Freshwater availability, land-use change and ocean acidification are flagged as increasing-risk, while stratospheric ozone depletion and atmospheric aerosol loading remain within safe limits.
The report warns of extreme weather intensifying, historic coral-reef bleaching, a credible risk of Atlantic overturning circulation collapse, and the onset of Antarctic ice sheet retreat. It also warns that the Amazon rainforest nears a tipping point that could transform it into savanna, releasing massive carbon stores. Despite the dire outlook, the authors argue that decisive mitigation and ecosystem restoration could still return Earth to a safe operating space.
