Seven youths assault peer at Rotorua justice centre, victim hospitalized

Oranga Tamariki documents reveal that a young person at the Te Maioha o Parekarangi youth justice facility in Rotorua was assaulted by seven other residents after a door was opened for a bathroom request. The attacker approached in a fighting stance, delivered a punch that knocked the victim to the ground, and was followed by further blows and kicks to the head and face. Staff called a code orange, attempted to restrain the group, and eventually shielded the victim before emergency services arrived.

The teen received first aid, was transported by ambulance with facility escorts to Rotorua Hospital, and returned to the centre after nine hours of treatment. The seven participants were moved to secure care, a report of concern was filed, and police were notified, though no arrests were made.
