Severe Baltic cyclone kills two and knocks out power for hundreds of thousands
A powerful storm swept across Latvia, Lithuania and neighboring regions, causing two deaths and widespread electricity outages.
A strong low-pressure system struck the Baltic area, delivering intense rain and gusts that reached 67 mph in Latvia's capital. The collapse of a structure in Jelgava resulted in one fatality, and additional injuries were reported nationwide. Lithuania saw a second death when a tree fell on a person, and over 200,000 people were left without electricity.
In Estonia, the western and northern islands faced ferry cancellations and train delays, while northeastern Poland suffered power losses for over 100,000 customers. Rail and other public transport networks in the region were hampered by debris, and Riga airport warned of possible flight disruptions. Authorities expect conditions to improve by Monday.
