Severe drought slashes Slovak corn and sugar beet harvests
A prolonged dry spell has dramatically reduced corn and sugar beet yields in Slovakia, according to the Statistical Office.
The Statistical Office reports that this year's corn harvest is expected to be roughly half of last year's level, with average yields per hectare falling sharply. Sugar beet production has also suffered a steep decline. Silage corn is projected to yield around 20 tonnes per hectare, the lowest since 2000. The drought and heat have impacted several key agricultural crops across the country.
Why it matters
The crop shortfall threatens food supply and farm earnings in Slovakia, highlighting climate risks to agriculture.
