Severe drought triggers massive fish die-off in Morava River near Olomouc

The drought-driven drop in water volume in the Morava and its tributaries has stripped the river of oxygen, causing the largest fish mortality since monitoring began in the 1990s. Anglers first observed the deaths in the second half of last week, with carcasses gathering near the small Kožušany-Tážaly hydro plant. Petr Loyka, head of the environmental department, said the die-off is still ongoing. The Olomouc city authority has extended a ban on water extraction from several streams until the end of October.
