Severe flash flood in Madrigueras claims 102-year-old resident, 90 rescued
Intense rain caused a flash flood in Madrigueras, Albacete, drowning a 102-year-old woman and prompting about 90 rescue operations.
A heavy downpour delivering 142 litres per square metre triggered the METEOCAM Plan in Madrigueras, Albacete, flooding the town and submerging homes. Water levels exceeded one metre inside a residence, resulting in the death of a 102-year-old woman. Around 90 individuals were rescued throughout the afternoon and early evening, many of whom were frightened and unsure how to respond.
Authorities have started de-escalating the operation, clearing debris and removing stranded vehicles, while the Civil Guard's USECIC remains on site overnight. A GEACAM team is expected to join the cleanup at first light, and road closures on CM-316, AB-105 and CM-3222 have been reported.
Why it matters
The flood highlights the vulnerability of small towns to extreme weather and the importance of rapid emergency response.
