Severe rain floods Euboea, cuts power on Skyros and traps two motorists

A powerful weather system has battered Greece since Saturday, delivering heavy rain, thunderstorms, hail and strong north-eastern winds. In Euboea the downpours flooded roads, prompting closures, while Skyros suffered electricity failures and the cancellation of several flights. Around 03:45, a 55-year-old Israeli man and woman were stranded in their car, which sank in mud on a road in Politika, Euboea; four volunteers from the Psachni fire brigade were dispatched after a 112 call and escorted them to a safe spot in Kamarritsa before 05:00.
The National Meteorological Service upgraded its alert to an orange warning, and the General Secretariat for Civil Protection reminded citizens to secure loose objects, keep drains clear and avoid crossing streams during the storm. Regional services and municipalities have been placed on heightened readiness to respond to further impacts.
