Severe storm system threatens Britain and could spark power cuts in Finland
A powerful low-pressure system is battering the UK and is expected to intensify over Finland, raising the risk of electricity outages in the south and west.
A deepening North Atlantic cyclone is delivering high winds to the United Kingdom, where widespread electricity failures were reported on Saturday. The same system is moving toward Finland, where the national weather service warned that wind speeds could climb to 15 metres per second over land and 21 metres per second over the sea, producing waves over five metres high. Pinja Rauhamäki, an on-duty meteorologist, indicated that the most severe impacts are likely in the southern and western parts of Finland, especially along the coast.
The storm is expected to persist with gusty conditions until Monday night, prompting storm warnings on the agency’s alert map. Ireland received an uncommon red alert, while orange alerts remain in place for Northern Ireland, Scotland and North England.
Why it matters
The storm poses immediate safety risks and could disrupt power supplies for many households in Finland and the UK.
