Severe thunderstorms trigger power outages and transit disruptions across Toronto region

Environment Canada warned that a series of extremely dangerous thunderstorms moved through the Greater Toronto Area, with radar estimating wind speeds close to 150 km/h, hail the size of ping-pong balls and intense rainfall. The agency downgraded Toronto’s alert from red to orange while maintaining a red warning for Mississauga and nearby municipalities. The storm left roughly 65,000 Toronto Hydro customers without electricity, prompted crews to restore service amid ongoing hazards, and caused widespread flooding that halted TTC service at several stations and forced GO Transit to report significant delays on multiple lines.

Police dealt with a surge of service calls as damage, including a roof torn off a Brampton building, was documented. A concert at the RBC Amphitheatre was postponed, and officials warned that additional thunderstorms could persist through the night.
