Severe wind storm threatens widespread power outages across most of Finland

PKS Sähkönsiirto warned that strong gusts expected Tuesday could knock down trees onto power lines, potentially causing outages throughout much of the country.

PKS Sähkönsiirto issued a warning that Tuesday's strong winds could cause power cuts across much of Finland, except for Lappi. In its network area, gusts are expected to surge to 16-18 metres per second, raising the risk of trees falling onto power lines. The utility has mobilised additional installation crews to support its normal emergency response, according to Juha Sirviö, the service manager.

Residents are cautioned against removing or repairing downed trees and damaged lines themselves due to safety hazards. The Finnish Meteorological Institute placed an orange warning on Tuesday for Satakunta, Pirkanmaa, Keski-Suomi, Pohjanmaa, Etelä-Pohjanmaa and Keski-Pohjanmaa, signalling dangerous wind conditions that may also affect other parts of the country apart from Lappi, including coastal areas.

Why it matters

Widespread outages could disrupt homes and businesses, highlighting the need for preparedness during extreme weather.
