Sh Schleswig-Holstein approves new interim storage site for low- and intermediate-level nuclear waste

The state government authorized a temporary storage facility for low- and intermediate-level radioactive waste at the former Krümmel nuclear plant in Geesthacht.

Sh Schleswig-Holstein's environment minister Tobias Goldschmidt signed off on a licence allowing an interim storage centre for low- and intermediate-level radioactive waste at the decommissioned Krümmel nuclear power plant in Geesthacht. The repository will hold waste generated by the plant's dismantling that does not produce heat, pending its eventual move to the Konrad deep-geological final repository in Salzgitter during the 2030s. All nuclear-law approvals for the site have been issued, and the federal agency Bundesgesellschaft für Zwischenlagerung will run the facility while monitoring compliance with radiation protection limits.

The state emphasised that the waste remains on-site, so external radiation exposure should not change. Environmental group BUND has pledged to continue monitoring water and radiation levels around the plant.

Why it matters

The approval moves Schleswig-Holstein further along its nuclear phase-out by securing safe interim storage for decommissioning waste.
