Shark alert issued as whale carcass drifts near City Beach, swimmers urged to stay out
Authorities have warned the public to avoid swimming at City Beach after a whale carcass was spotted, citing the risk of attracting sharks.
Early on Monday, a whale carcass was observed near City Beach, a popular Perth coastal spot in the Town of Cambridge. The Department of Primary Industries and Regional Development warned that the remains could act as a magnet for sharks, potentially bringing them near the shoreline. In response, Surf Life Saving WA issued a shark warning and advised the public to stay out of the water, while council rangers and Parks and Wildlife enforced beach closures.
Authorities recommend heightened vigilance and suggest monitoring shark activity via the SharkSmart portal. Any shark sightings are to be reported to Water Police at 9442 8600. Multiple agencies, including DPIRD, continue to monitor the situation and provide guidance to relevant officials.
