Shark attack near Sorrento Beach leads to beach closures and capture operation
A swimmer in his 60s was attacked by a shark about 15 metres offshore at Sorrento Beach on Friday morning and has not been recovered, prompting police to list him as missing and presumed dead. Emergency services, including water police, the Police Air Wing and St John WA ambulances, have continued air, sea and shoreline searches. The Department of Primary Industries and Regional Development has placed capture gear 1.5 km off Sorrento Beach, while the City of Joondalup has closed its beaches from the J210 Marmion sign to the J37 Iluka sign, with a review scheduled for later Sunday.
Fisheries Minister Jackie Jarvis has directed that the animal be destroyed, and officials note this is the second shark incident on Western Australia’s coast within five days. The species of the shark has not been officially identified.
