Shell evacuates non-essential crews from six Gulf platforms amid tropical depression
Shell is removing non-essential personnel from six offshore platforms in the Gulf of Mexico as Invest 92L approaches, while saying operations remain unaffected.
Shell has ordered the evacuation of non-essential employees from six of its Gulf of Mexico platforms—Stones, Mars, Olympus, Ursa, Vito and Appomattox—as the tropical depression Invest 92L moves toward the region. In a statement, the company said it is closely tracking the system and that the precautionary move does not affect ongoing operations on the assets. Shell reiterated its commitment to the safety of its workforce, the environment and its infrastructure, and pledged to continue monitoring weather updates.
The US National Hurricane Center notes that the developing cyclone could strengthen into Hurricane Isaias, bringing potentially severe winds and heavy rainfall to coastal areas from Louisiana to Florida by week’s end. No other impacts on Shell’s Gulf activities have been reported so far.
