Shopify acquires Tailwind CSS to secure its open-source future amid AI competition

Tailwind Labs has been acquired by Shopify, according to a blog announcement by CEO Aadam Wathan. The deal is presented as a rescue, ensuring that the popular open-source CSS framework remains freely available under its MIT license and receives dedicated upkeep within Shopify’s product ecosystem. Wathan praised Shopify’s mission to empower businesses and its long-standing use of Tailwind in its own stack.

While the core framework will continue unchanged, the company will cease new sign-ups for its paid offerings, Tailwind Plus and the AI-assisted ui.sh package, though current subscribers will keep access. Wathan linked the acquisition to recent revenue pressures caused by AI coding tools that reduced traffic and income for Tailwind Labs. He expects the partnership to provide a stable environment for the millions of developers who rely on Tailwind CSS.
