Shopify CEO warns AI-generated output can create extra work for staff
Shopify chief executive Tobias Lütke said AI tools often produce low-quality output that forces coworkers to spend time cleaning it up, calling the phenomenon “slop grenades.”
During a conversation on "The Knowledge Project" podcast, Shopify CEO Tobias Lütke highlighted a downside of AI adoption: the spread of poorly vetted output he labels “slop grenades.” He argued that AI enables workers to generate material quickly but often without checking its usefulness or accuracy, leading to extra effort for colleagues who must re-process the content. Lütke gave the example of a needlessly lengthy AI-drafted email that required another language model to condense it, questioning the purpose of such redundant steps.
Shopify has integrated AI across its operations, including an internal agent called River that may handle up to half of the company’s code pull-request reviews. Nonetheless, Lütke stressed that AI is most valuable when it sharpens human thinking and that ultimate responsibility for output remains with people. He concluded that machines can help humans be more accountable by providing better information.
