Shri Thanedar’s laser-eye ad fails to stop primary defeat in Detroit

Michigan Democrat Shri Thanedar posted a video wearing a shirt with laser-eye graphics, urging voters to support him in the August 4 primary, but he lost to a democratic socialist opponent.

Shri Thanedar, the Democratic representative from Michigan, released a promotional video showing himself in downtown Detroit wearing red sneakers, shorts and a black shirt printed with his photo and red laser-eye effects. In the clip he urges the public to vote in the August 4 primary so he can continue opposing the Trump administration’s actions. The footage was featured on Sara Gonzales’s program, where the host ridiculed the visual and questioned its relatability.

Earlier interviews have also drawn criticism, including a confusing exchange about the five Grosse Pointe cities and a disputed comment on animal welfare. Thanedar’s campaign has suffered a series of embarrassing incidents, and his defeat to a democratic socialist challenger was not unexpected.

Why it matters

The story illustrates how unconventional campaign tactics can backfire and reflect broader challenges for incumbents facing progressive challengers.
