Sibiu-Pitești highway section 4 reaches 99% completion, tunnel tests pending
The fourth segment of the Sibiu-Pitești A1 highway is 99% finished, with the 1.35-km Momaia tunnel awaiting safety tests before opening.
The national road authority announced that the fourth section of the Sibiu-Pitești A1 highway, between Tigveni and Curtea de Argeș, has reached a 99% physical completion rate, encompassing 9.86 km of roadway built by Austrian contractor PORR. All 12 bridges, passages and viaducts, totaling 2,620 meters, have been surfaced, signed and fitted with parapets. The adjacent Momaia tunnel, 1,350 meters long, is practically complete, and officials are conducting final safety and monitoring system tests, including video cameras and sensors.
The tunnel’s operating speed will be capped at 80 km/h for safety. Traffic on the section will be allowed only after the tunnel passes these safety evaluations, with the opening scheduled before the contractual deadline of February 2027.
Why it matters
Completion of this highway segment will improve transport links in Romania once safety tests are cleared.
