Siegfried Mureșan proposes stripping prosecutor general of case-overturn powers

In the governing agenda presented by designated prime minister Siegfried Mureșan, a new provision would eliminate the prosecutor general’s capacity to intervene in criminal dossiers and nullify actions taken by case prosecutors. The same text also bars the chief of the National Anticorruption Directorate from stepping into cases within its jurisdiction. This measure is listed under chapter 12 of the program, which PNL published on Wednesday evening.

The broader plan also suggests changing how members of the Consiliul Superior al Magistraturii are chosen, extending voting to a national level within each professional corps. Judges would elect judges and prosecutors would elect prosecutors. Moreover, the program seeks to speed up judicial proceedings to prevent cases from lapsing due to prescription.
