Sikh truck driver stabbed at Wyoming rest stop as anti-South Asian hate spikes

A Punjabi Sikh truck driver traveling to Pennsylvania was attacked at a south-Wyoming rest stop after sensing a man trailing him into the restroom. The assailant beat Singh and stabbed him several times, including near his neck, before fleeing. A Hispanic family on site administered first aid, saving his life, and he is still in hospital with chest and rib injuries.

Sweetwater County Sheriff’s Office arrested 45-year-old Andrew Kris Bzdak, charging him with attempted first-degree murder; officials have not identified a motive. The incident follows a national rise in anti-South Asian hate, documented by Stop AAPI Hate, and a recent DHS post that used a Sikh driver’s image in a demeaning message. Jasjit Singh of the Jakara Movement warned that the hostile climate contributed to the attack, while Raman Dhillon of the North American Punjabi Trucking Association reported growing safety concerns among drivers. Singh, who lives in Sacramento, expressed anxiety over medical bills, missed work, and the safety of fellow Sikh drivers.
