Silicon Valley Philanthropy Poised for $40 billion AI Safety Surge

In an interview, Alexander Berger, who has led Coefficient Giving since 2023, described how the foundation’s early bets on AI safety are now paying off, with Redwood Research receiving a $36 million grant after a high-profile hack of Hugging Face. He argues that philanthropy is uniquely positioned to fund fast-moving AI guardrails that governments cannot match. Looking ahead, Berger estimates that successful IPOs by Anthropic and OpenAI could generate about $40 billion in annual philanthropic spending, a scale rivaling multiple Gates Foundations.

He highlighted Coefficient’s ongoing commitments to global public health, animal welfare and its utilitarian philosophy, while acknowledging criticism of its Effective Altruism roots. Berger stressed that philanthropy should tackle non-majoritarian, high-impact issues that lack market or political support.
