Simple fixes can boost home Wi-Fi speed without upgrading your plan
Experts say many slow-Wi-Fi problems stem from router placement and home layout, not the broadband package itself.
Home internet users frequently assume that a slow Wi-Fi connection means they need a faster broadband deal, but the real issue is often the router’s location or the property’s layout. Catherine Hiley of Go.Compare notes that even with the government's Project Gigabit reaching 88% of UK homes, signal drop-outs can still occur in rooms like back bedrooms, loft conversions, kitchens, garden offices, and garages. Simple steps such as moving the router to a central, elevated position and keeping it away from large appliances can improve coverage.
For persistent dead zones, she recommends using a Wi-Fi extender, installing a mesh network, or running an Ethernet cable to devices that need stable connections, such as gaming consoles or TVs. Testing each room individually helps identify the most effective solution before spending on a higher-speed package.
