Singapore hires international experts to boost nuclear readiness ahead of 2027 IAEA review

Singapore's National Environment Agency and Energy Market Authority have engaged foreign consultants to strengthen nuclear expertise before the IAEA's 2027 assessment.

Two Singaporean agencies have brought in overseas nuclear consultants to deepen the country's capabilities ahead of the International Atomic Energy Agency's 2027 review. The National Environment Agency selected Enconet Consulting, AtkinsRealis Singapore and Environmental Resources Management to study environmental standards and safety requirements for nuclear plants. The Energy Market Authority engaged twelve firms, including Aecom Singapore, Boston Consulting Group and WSP Consultancy, to provide guidance on waste management, financing, legal frameworks and human-resource development.

Minister for Energy, Trade and Industry Tan See Leng stressed that numerous studies are needed to ensure any nuclear programme meets the highest safety, security and safeguards standards. EMA plans to appoint a second technical advisory panel by late 2026, and the appointments align with Singapore's broader effort to build nuclear expertise and to promote regional cooperation as it assumes the ASEAN chairmanship in 2027.

Why it matters

The hires signal Singapore's serious move toward nuclear power, affecting regional energy security and safety standards.
